Biography
Dr. Ian Martin is System Chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine at 老澳门六合彩图库 (老澳门六合彩图库) Medical School and Emergency Physician-in-Chief for Froedtert and the 老澳门六合彩图库 Health System. At 老澳门六合彩图库, he holds appointments as Eminent Scholar and Professor with Tenure of Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine. Dr. Martin is also Professor in the Institute for Health and Equity. Before this, he served as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine at West Virginia University School of Medicine as well as Emergency Physician-in-Chief for West Virginia University Health System.
Dr. Martin earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Duke University. He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from Medical College of Pennsylvania-Hahnemann School of Medicine (now Drexel University College of Medicine) and his Master of Business Administration degree from the University of North Carolina (UNC) Kenan-Flagler Business School. Dr. Martin trained in Emergency Medicine and General Internal Medicine at the University of Maryland Medical Center and R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore – where he also served as Chief Resident.
Dr. Martin is board-certified in Emergency Medicine by the American Board of Emergency Medicine and in Internal Medicine/Focused Practice in Hospital Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine. For much of his career, Dr. Martin has maintained a continuous clinical practice in the Emergency Department (ED) and on inpatient General Medicine teaching wards.
Dr. Martin has devoted his academic career to improving the delivery of emergency care globally – with emphasis on East Africa – through program development, investigative research, and direct clinical care. At Duke University School of Medicine, he founded and directed the Duke International Emergency Medicine Fellowship/Global Health Residency Program – a program that continues to train emergency physicians for a career in global health and emergency care. At UNC School of Medicine, Dr. Martin established and led the thriving Division of Global Health and Emergency Care (within the Department of Emergency Medicine), established and administered the highly competitive UNC Emergency Medicine Global Health and Leadership Program, and served as Associate Director of the UNC Office of International Activities, the prestigious Simmons Scholars Career Development Program, and the nationally-recognized Emergency Medicine residency program. As part of his strategy for implementing sustainable initiatives abroad, Dr. Martin has developed and administered popular, longitudinal clinical and research rotations for medical students and residents traveling to Republic of Kenya and the United Republic of Tanzania.
Dr. Martin’s research interests include elucidation of optimal models for ED-based HIV and hepatitis C testing and acute care disease burden epidemiology in parts of the developing world. His research findings, and other global health-related initiatives, have culminated in a host of state-of-the-art publications in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Martin has garnered grant support for his research from federal and state agencies, industry, and academic institutions. He enjoys an international reputation – frequently presenting on invitation at international and national conferences. Additionally, across his career, Dr. Martin has taught and mentored countless learners as well as numerous young faculty members, respectively.
Recognized for his leadership, Dr. Martin was elected to the Board of the Association of Academic Chairs of Emergency Medicine (AACEM) – whose mission is to enhance and support academic departments of Emergency Medicine as they improve healthcare through high-quality education and research. After completion of a term as an At-Large Board Member, he now serves at AACEM’s Secretary-Treasurer. Before his election to the AACEM Board, Dr. Martin completed terms as Immediate Past-President, President, President-Elect, Secretary-Treasurer, and an At-Large Member of the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM) – the premier association representing researchers and educators in Emergency Medicine. Dr. Martin is also the founder and a Past-President of SAEM’s Global Emergency Medicine Academy. In 2020, he was appointed by the Mayor of Milwaukee to the City of Milwaukee Board of Health for an indefinite term. The same year, he was also appointed to the Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin Endowment External Board (the Consortium on Public and Community Health), also for an indefinite term. Finally, in 2021, Dr. Martin was appointed to the Milwaukee Tennis and Education Foundation Board of Directors.
Dr. Martin is the 2018 recipient of the Marcus L. Martin, M.D. Leadership in Diversity and Inclusion Award by the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine. Dr. Martin was recently named recipient of the 2020 Drexel University College of Medicine Distinguished Alumnus Award as well as of the 2020 Georges Benjamin, M.D. Award for excellence in education, service, and research by the National Medical Association’s Emergency Medicine Section. Lastly, in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Martin was named recipient of a “Notable Heroes in Health Care” Award by BizTimes Milwaukee. Recently, members of the Class of 2023 Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) 老澳门六合彩图库-beta Chapter selected him to join them as an inductee into the prestigious AOA national honor society. In 2023, Milwaukee County honored Dr. Martin with a citation for launching Wisconsin’s first opt-out, universal, emergency department-based HIV testing program.
Dr. Martin is a fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians and the American Academy of Emergency Medicine.
