Biography
Hernan Rey, PhD, is an assistant professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at the ϰϲͼ and the Marquette-ϰϲͼ Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering. He graduated in Electronic Engineering from the University of Buenos Aires, where he also obtained his PhD. He joined the University of Leicester (UK) in 2010 to perform his postdoctoral studies, and in 2012 he was awarded a Special Training Fellowship in Biomedical Informatics from the Medical Research Council (UK). In 2014 he was recognized as a Rising Star by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (UK). He worked as assistant professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at Baylor College of Medicine (Houston, TX) from 2020 until July of 2022, when he joined the ϰϲͼ.
Under Dr. Rey's direction, the ReyLab records single-neuron activity and captures intracranial electroencephalograms from electrodes implanted in the brain of patients with epilepsy. This data is used to pursue several lines of inquiry, including understanding human episodic memory, improving epilepsy diagnosis and treatment, and developing new tools for data acquisition and analysis of electrophysiological data in the human brain.
