ϰϲͼ Office of Research and CTSI External Review Program

This joint program offered by the Office of Research and the CTSI provides an external review for R01-level grants.

In conjunction with the Clinical & Translational Science Institute (CTSI), the Office of Research is pleased to continue offering external review of applications for R01 and K-level grants (from NIH or other major funders) prior to submission. CTSI membership is not required for this program, and investigators in all areas of research - basic science, clinical, population science - are encouraged to participate. Assurance that the application has been internally reviewed and is supported by the investigator's Department Chair is required.

The program will make arrangements to provide a full NIH style review by an outside reviewer, ideally an individual with recent study section experience in the relevant area. The reviews will be officially solicited by Ann Rosenthal, MD, associate dean and professor of rheumatology. An honorarium of $750 per proposal will be made available to external reviewers for a timely return of the review.

Interested faculty should contact the Office of Research or Dr. Rosenthal for an application form to request this service. This form requires a commitment from the PI to have a complete draft of the grant application ready by the date indicated in the table below, including the following information for the selected external reviewers:

  • Introduction and summary statement from the previous review (if applicable)

  • Specific aims

  • Research plan

  • Biosketches for key personnel

  • Budget and budget justification

  • Scientific Environment (facilities, cores, etc.)

Reviews will be solicited in a timely manner, allotting the PI a minimum of 3 weeks to make modifications based on reviewer comments in advance of the deadline for submission to ϰϲͼ's Grants and Contracts Office for sponsor submission.

Key dates for the external review program are provided in the tables below. For more information, contact the Office of Research or Dr. Rosenthal
