About our program

The Hospitalist Quality Improvement (QI) Program is led by the Hospitalist Medical Director of Quality, Paul J. Cimoch, MD, FACP. It involves the implementation of focused projects with the goal to improve the quality of hospital processes or patient outcomes in our Hospitalist Section.

Quality Improvement Projects

Since April 2020, our section has instituted over 50 QI projects. On a rolling basis, the section often has over 25 ongoing projects and has completed multiple successful projects.

QI Project Ideas

Ideas for QI projects come from individuals in the hospitalist group or are identified by leadership as an area for improvement.
Project categories can include:

  • Improving the patient experience
  • Reducing hospital length of stay
  • Reducing hospital readmissions
  • Improving provider communication, among many others

QI Project Idea Process

Hospitalists bring ideas to a monthly meeting where colleagues and support staff provide feedback and identify the necessary resources for implementation. Our quality program has a Hospitalist Program Manager who assists with implementation, monitoring, and data acquisition for QI projects. Further assistance is available if there is a desire to publish findings.

QI Project Metrics

The Hospitalist QI Program, in collaboration with the DOM leadership, has also established monitoring metrics with goals for the Hospitalist Section. Some metrics have evolved from the QI projects as discussed as above. These metrics are trended monthly for the entire section and for each provider with monthly reports distributed to each provider. Quarterly QI updates and education are provided to the section at the monthly business meeting. The QI program also orchestrates the Hospitalist Section Morbidity and Mortality (M&M) Conferences.
