ϰϲͼ Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Giving

Looking to the needs of our community, philanthropy sets the stage for PM&R to reach the next level of excellence by accelerating novel research, advancing clinical care, training the next generation of clinicians and scientists, and elevating the impact of the Froedtert Bluemound Rehab Hospital. With philanthropic partners, our goal is to be recognized as a top ten program in the country within the next ten years.

Department Mission

An endowed departmental fund for PM&R would provide unrestricted resources to support research projects, foster professional development, and expand educational training programs for healthcare providers. Additionally, the endowment would develop an educational academy for healthcare professionals, caregivers, and community members and foster reentry through innovative programming and growth of adaptive sports and recreational programming.

Support Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

Donor investments will establish innovation funds to accelerate promising projects in these areas along with endowed professorships to attract world-class investigators and physician-scientists in fields such as amputee care and delivery, prosthetics and orthotics, brain injury medicine, cancer rehabilitation and neurorehabilitation (stroke, spinal cord injury, MS). Philanthropy will also provide leadership training, research scholarship, and professional development opportunities for our exceptional faculty and research team.

Pharm Research

Groundbreaking Research

The PM&R Department must expand our portfolio of multidisciplinary basic science and translational research to elevate our national impact and reputation. Priority areas include stroke rehabilitation, cancer rehabilitation, spinal cord injury, brain injury and new research arms on neurorehabilitation, prehabilitation and innovation. The department is also seeking investments to expand studies on targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR) – a specialized procedure that reroutes severed or injured nerves to new muscle targets using microsurgical techniques to provide the nerve endings with a new muscle to innervate.

Training the Next Generation

Quality care begins with training the next generation of specialized clinicians and researchers. Philanthropy will provide essential resources to attract more top-tier MD PhD students and residents, including those interested in pursuing novel PM&R research. Additionally, investments to endow fellowship programs will advance our national reputation, attract the brightest candidates across the globe, and accelerate new innovations in translational research and clinical care. Fellowship opportunities include spasticity, pain management, spinal cord injury, brain injury medicine, and neuromuscular medicine using electromyography as a technique for evaluating and recording the electrical activity produced by skeletal muscles.

Advancing Clinical Care

Once a person is treated in the rehab hospital, they often become a lifelong patient of PM&R practice due to the need for ongoing specialized care. The generosity of philanthropy will advance our exceptional, multidisciplinary care for patients throughout their treatment journeys by supporting efforts such as:

  • Accommodating therapy training spaces for children and adults
  • Clinical staff professional development, such as specialized training for nurses who treat patients with brain injuries and staff wellness activities to support caregivers who care for vulnerable patient populations
  • Technology advancements to expand resources for amputees, such as 3D printers and prosthetic devices
  • Cultural and social events for patients and their loved ones, and model resources for accommodating home environments
    (wheelchairs, ramps, etc.)
  • A database for the Children’s Wisconsin team to better track patient data, treatment strategies, and relevant health information on spasticity scores and gross motor functional skills for children with cerebral palsy. The database will elevate our efforts to provide personalized treatment plans and targeted surgeries for patients.

Froedtert Bluemound Rehab Hospital

The new Froedtert Bluemound Rehab Hospital positions our institution as a prominent leader in PM&R in Wisconsin and across the country. Philanthropic opportunities include:

  • An Innovation Center in this free-standing, rehab hospital would put our program at the center of the national stage by fostering seamless collaboration among researchers, clinicians, and engineers to quickly translate new discoveries and innovations to the clinical realm. The center would feature state-of the-art, integrated therapy and research spaces with the latest 3D printing and engineering equipment to make adaptations for wheelchairs, home devices, prosthetics, and more.
  • A Healing Garden would provide a welcoming, relaxing, and beautiful space for patients, families, and staff to gather for social events and share quality time together during treatment.
  • We are open to exploring naming opportunities in the Froedtert Bluemound Rehab Hospital in recognition of transformative philanthropic investments in our  clinical, educational, and research missions.
